What to Expect: A Beginner’s Guide to Your Very First Massage at Massage Therapeutics

Taking the step to book your first massage is an incredible investment in your physical and mental well-being. However, if you have never experienced professional bodywork before, it is completely normal to feel a little anxious or unsure about what to expect.

At Massage Therapeutics, we want you to feel completely comfortable from the moment you walk through our doors. Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of what will happen during your very first session with us.

1. The Pre-Session Consultation

When you arrive at Massage Therapeutics, you will fill out a quick health intake form. I will then sit down with you for a brief chat before any hands-on work begins.

Together, we will discuss:

  • Your goals: Are you looking for pure relaxation, stress relief, or targeted pain management?

  • Your health history: Any past injuries, chronic conditions, or areas that are currently tender.

  • Pressure preference: Whether you prefer a light, gentle touch or firm, deep tissue pressure.

2. The Question Everyone Asks: What Do I Wear?

This is the most common concern for first-time clients, and the answer is simple: undress to your exact level of comfort.

Some clients prefer to leave their some clothing on, while others choose to undress completely. I will always step completely out of the room to give you absolute privacy while you undress and get onto the massage table beneath the top sheet.

3. Professional Draping Keeps You Covered

You will never be completely exposed during your session. At Massage Therapeutics, I practice strict, professional draping techniques using a clean sheet and blanket.

Only the specific part of your body being worked on at that exact moment (like your upper back or a single leg) will be uncovered. The rest of your body remains securely and warmly covered throughout the entire session.

4. You Are in Complete Control

A massage should never feel unbearably painful. While working through a tight muscle knot can feel intense, it should always fall into a category of safe, therapeutic relief.

You are the boss of your session. Please speak up at any point if you want your therapist to:

  • Use more or less pressure.

  • Adjust the room temperature or table warmer.

  • Change the volume of the background music.

  • Skip a specific area entirely (such as your feet, hands, or scalp).

5. Post-Massage Care & Recovery

When your session ends, I will leave the room so you can dress in private.

Once you are ready, I always recommend drinking a large glass of water to rehydrate your muscles, therefore I provide a complimentary bottled refresher drink . You might feel incredibly relaxed, a little sleepy, or uniquely energized right after a session. Take your time getting up from the table, and enjoy that post-massage glow!
